Brahmachari is not a sex comedy: Chandra Mohan

Brahmachari is not a sex comedy: Chandra Mohan
When the title of Sathish Ninasam’s second collaboration with filmmaker Uday K Mehta, after Love In Mandya, was announced, the first thought that crossed most minds was that it would be a sex comedy. It was, after all called Brahmachari, with the tagline ‘100% Virgin’. The film, though, just got certified U/A with no cuts or mutes, which, Uday says, goes a long way in affirming what his team has been stating all along — that it is a clean family entertainer.

“Brahmachari is based on an idea that I had, which I had discussed with Sathish almost four years ago. He was quite excited about my chain of thoughts, so we decided to work it into script and then see how to take it further. To my luck, I got director Chandra Mohan, of Bombay Mithai and Double Engine fame, on board. He has a knack of dealing with subjects that may, on the surface, seem like for adults only, and weave them into narratives that a family can watch together, with the help of comedy,” says Uday.
The filmmaker adds that his intention was to present the story without a double entendre, or anything else that may be deemed vulgar. “I was very clear that the subject had to be dealt with utmost care, and director Chandra Mohan did a great job at it. The film is a star-to-finish laugh riot, and the bonus is that Sathish, who has a flair for comedy, is in it,” adds Uday.
Writing the script and screenplay, though, was easier said than done for the director. “It was quite a challenge to present a subject with a sexual undertone, in a format that works for all audiences. I could not afford to have a scene or line that would make families squeamish. The censor certification proves that my job is done. Now it is up to audiences to decide,” says Chandra Mohan.
